Deload week. I've been dragging a bit through my days recently, so I needed this (both what follows as well as the week to deload). Due to a glitch in my regular schedule and, I think, Divine Inspiration, I decided to change gears nutritionally. I typically take 1000 IUs of Vitamin D3 each morning after breakfast. This morning I added an Omega 3, 6, and 9 supplement to my vitamin intake. No big deal. Taught my Cardio and Strength Training class (60 min), and was slogging around like a wet noodle afterward. Taught my Group Functional Training class and then had a short break between that group and a personal training client. I fueled differently at this point. Normally, I pop a good protein bar (low sugar, good balance of protein, carb, and healthy fat) into my gym bag when I know I'll need to refuel at some point between classes and clients, but today I thought to bring along one of those pouches of low sodium tuna packed in water (by Starkist) and a banana. The calories in the tuna are ridiculously low at 90 per serving (the entire pouch), 1 gm of fat, 0 carbs, and 21 gms of good quality protein. Here's the big news: I was so noticeably "brightened" in my mood and energy after that simple repast that I am now SOLD on this combo as a great post workout "meal" and/or refueling snack. I'm sure the extra Omega 3, 6, 9 had something to do with my "boost" except that it came hours later and only IMMEDIATELY AFTER I ate my tuna and banana snack.
